The calendar had reached the end of November and winter was showing its teeth. The time was around nine in the morning, but my body clock was still upside down after a long journey over 11 time zones. We had been on the move for three days and had stopped the pick-up by the banks of the river Kamchatka, which cuts through the huge peninsular on Russia’s Pacific coast from north to south. The plan was that a little ferry, which could carry two cars at a time, would transport us over the river.
